Ergonomicland Chairs: Quality, Laboratory Testing and Standards

Ergonomicland bases its quality not only on the product's appearance or the number of functions, but on specific technical specifications, independent laboratory tests, and material control.

An ergonomic office chair can be used for many hours every workday, so its quality is determined by the entire construction – seat, backrest, mechanism, base, castors, adjustment elements, and materials used.

When evaluating Ergonomicland chairs, we consider ergonomic adaptability, structural robustness, materials, adjustment options, and documented laboratory test results.

For some key Ergonomicland models, independent SGS laboratory tests have been carried out in accordance with the requirements of EN 1335 and ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standards, and Eurofins REACH / SVHC material tests have been performed on office chair components.

SGS Laboratory Tests

Independent tests of the structure and ergonomic parameters of key Ergonomicland models.

EN 1335

European requirements for dimensions, ergonomic adaptability, and safety of office work chairs.

ANSI/BIFMA X5.1

Standard used for testing the structural integrity and durability of office chairs.

REACH / SVHC – PASS

Material tests of office chair components performed in Eurofins laboratory.

Quality that can be substantiated

In the Ergonomicland assortment, we focus primarily on ergonomic chairs designed for regular and prolonged computer work.

When evaluating models, the following are important to us:

  • range of ergonomic adjustments;
  • seat and backrest construction;
  • lumbar support functionality;
  • mechanism design;
  • armrest and headrest adjustment;
  • chair base and castors;
  • materials used;
  • structural stability and robustness;
  • tests performed by independent laboratories;
  • documented test results.

ErgoPrime and ErgoActive are the main Ergonomicland ergonomic chair models. ErgoElite is aimed at users looking for a higher-class construction, materials, and extensive ergonomic adjustment.

Independent SGS laboratory tests

Tests of the main Ergonomicland chair models were conducted at the SGS laboratory.

Laboratory documents evaluate specific chair parameters according to the requirements of selected international office chair standards.

The main standards used in Ergonomicland documents are:

EN 1335 – a group of European standards applicable to office work chairs.

ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 – a standard applicable to general-purpose office chairs, covering various tests for structural integrity, stability, and durability.

Transparency over general certification claims

A laboratory can perform either the entire set of tests for a specific standard or specific selected tests from it. Therefore, Ergonomicland specifies the exact tests performed and their results, rather than using a general "BIFMA certified" statement in cases where the document confirms a selected standard test.

EN 1335-1 – office chair dimensions and adjustment range

EN 1335-1 primarily evaluates the dimensions of an office work chair and parameters important for ergonomic adaptability.

Depending on the chair's design, parameters such as:

  • seat height and its adjustment range;
  • seat depth;
  • seat width;
  • backrest dimensions;
  • lumbar support position;
  • armrest height and arrangement;
  • other geometric parameters important for the adaptability of an office work chair.

The main Ergonomicland models ErgoPrime, ErgoActive, ErgoElite, and ErgoBalance have SGS test results for EN 1335-1:2020+A1:2022 Type C – PASS.

EN 1335-2 – structural load tests

EN 1335-2 relates to the safety and mechanical resistance requirements of office work chairs.

A combined static load test for the seat and backrest was performed on the ErgoPrime, ErgoActive, and ErgoBalance models according to EN 1335-2:2018.

The results of the tests performed are – PASS.

This type of laboratory test is designed to evaluate the chair's structural behavior under standardized mechanical load.

ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 – structural strength tests

ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 – a standard used for office chairs, covering various tests for structural integrity, stability, and durability.

Specific tests according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 requirements were performed for some Ergonomicland models at the SGS laboratory.

Static backrest strength test

A static backrest strength test was performed on the ErgoPrime, ErgoActive, ErgoElite, and ErgoBalance models according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1.

During the test, two loads were applied to the backrest:

  • 667 N functional load – to assess whether the chair retains its functionality after the load;
  • 1001 N proof load – to assess structural integrity under a higher load.

The results of the SGS laboratory tests performed are – PASS.

These are specific laboratory structural tests, not a subjective quality assessment by the manufacturer or seller.

The SGS laboratory performed a Dynamic Drop Test on ErgoFit according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 – PASS.

Additionally, selected construction and safety requirements tests from BS EN 12520:2015 were performed – PASS.

Material control – Eurofins REACH / SVHC tests

The quality of a chair is determined not only by its mechanism or structural robustness but also by the materials used in its production.

Office chair components underwent Eurofins Product Testing Service REACH / SVHC material testing according to the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006.

The object of the study was office chair components, and the evaluation result according to the ECHA SVHC candidate list valid at the time of the study was – PASS.

The study evaluated different groups of metallic and non-metallic chair components, including:

  • foam;
  • plastic parts;
  • castors;
  • metal structural elements;
  • screws and other components.

These tests provide an additional independent level of material control alongside structural and ergonomic tests.

Fabric and mesh material tests

Separate SGS REACH / SVHC tests have been conducted for some of the upholstery and mesh materials used in Ergonomicland chairs.

For example, LY-01 – a black knitted polyester fabric used in some Ergonomicland models.

An SGS REACH / SVHC test was performed on this material, with a result of – PASS.

This allows quality to be assessed not only at the final product level but also at the level of individual material components used.

Quality management of production processes

Ergonomicland evaluates not only the final product but also the management of production processes.

The manufacturing partner for some Ergonomicland models holds:

  • ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system certificate;
  • ISO 45001:2018 occupational health and safety management system certificate.

These ISO certificates are management system certificates for the manufacturing company, not product certificates for specific Ergonomicland chairs.

Ergonomicland views them as an additional signal for production process management, but not as a substitute for product laboratory tests.

Why don't we just write "BIFMA certified"?

Technical accuracy and transparency are important to us.

If a laboratory report indicates that a specific ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 test was performed, Ergonomicland specifies that exact test performed and its result.

For example:

"Static backrest strength test according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 – PASS."

This is more precise information than the general "BIFMA certified" statement in cases where the laboratory document confirms a specific standard test.

We apply the same principle to EN 1335, REACH, and other laboratory documents.

What does Ergonomicland understand as a high-class ergonomic chair?

For us, a high-class ergonomic chair is not just a chair with many adjustment levers or an impressive design.

We evaluate four main quality elements:

1. Ergonomic adaptability

How precisely the chair can be adjusted to different users – their height, body composition, sitting position, and workstation.

2. Construction

Solutions for the mechanism, base, backrest, seat, and other load-bearing elements.

3. Materials

Mesh, foam, fabrics, metal and polymer components, castors, and other everyday use elements.

4. Documented quality

Results of independent laboratory tests, material tests, and technical specifications.

It is the combination of these elements that determines whether Ergonomicland considers a model suitable for intensive and long-term daily use.
